This presentation discusses oral health issues for pregnant individuals, as well as any special concerns relative to HIV. The speakers review common oral diseases and conditions with an emphasis on the importance of routine dental care during pregnancy and any contraindications to treatment, comfort, and quality of care. The importance of medical/dental collaboration is also reviewed. 

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, the participant will:

1. Better understand the integrated care approach between obstetricians, dentists, HIV specialists, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care.
2. Become familiar with considerations for pregnancy when prescribing medications to ensure they are safe for both mother and fetus and avoid any potential drug interactions that could affect oral or overall health.
3. Appreciate the benefit of early intervention to manage oral diseases in pregnant women.
4. Better understand how to apply preventive measures including professional dental cleanings and the use of fluoride treatments to prevent decay In pregnant women.
5. Appreciate the safety of dental x-rays in pregnant women.
