Description
The 2024 Conference for Youth Sexual Health Education (CYSHE): Beyond Prevention is an event being organized by the Rhode Island HIV & STI Prevention Coalition with assistance from the Brown University AIDS Program (BRUNAP). The conference will cover topics such as dating violence prevention, sexual violence, and ageism as it pertains to marginalized or otherwise overlooked youth. The conference seeks to address gaps in knowledge involving fundamentals of sexual education observed in demographics such as LGBT and disabled adolescents and young adults.
Speakers:
Shael Norris is the Founding Executive Director of SafeBAE, the only US national survivor-founded, youth-led organization working to prevent sexual violence among teens.
Faith Bessette is a youth advocate at Sojourner House with a passion for active listening and encouraging others to give themselves grace.
Michaela Maynard, MPH, MSN, NP-C, WHNP-BC graduated in 2007 after majoring in Spanish. She then went on to get a Master of Public Health from The George Washington University as well as a Master of Science of Nursing from Yale University. She currently serves as Clinical Manager at Open Door Health in Providence, RI. Open Door Health is Rhode Island’s only dedicated LGBTQ+ primary care and sexual health clinic.
Philip Chan, MD, MS, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Brown University. He has a secondary appointment in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Brown University School of Public Health. Dr. Chan is Medical Director of the only publicly funded sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic in Rhode Island, as well as Rhode Island’s only dedicated Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Program.
Learning Objectives:

Acquire knowledge and tools to engage youth in sexual health education that moves beyond HIV and STI prevention.

Examine the latest RI data and regulations, including the updated Title IX regulations, and most recent YRBS and School Health Profiles data.

Demonstrate knowledge in promoting healthy relationships, sexual decision-making, and creating healthy & welcoming spaces.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital.
